AdBlue and AUS40 for the Marine industry

AUS40 for marine ISO18611 applications is a blend of demineralised water and urea (urea content 40%). AdBlue® is a blend of demineralised water and urea (urea content 32.5%). Both of these fluids act as reduction agents for SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology for NOx emission control.

Whether you choose AdBlue® or AUS40 depends on your vessel. AUS40 has a higher concentration of urea and is more efficient for larger vessels, while AdBlue® is more delicate and therefore more suitable for small engines.

Strong efforts have been made on the development of technology that can reduce such emissions effectively. SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology, using urea solutions as the reduction agents, is considered to be a key technology for abating NOx emissions in the marine sector. New and stricter emissions legislation will be implemented in the marine sector. Shallow and deep sea vessels, as well as inland vessels, will be equipped with SCR technology in the time period from 2016 to 2021.

In so-called ECAs (Emission Control Areas), the emissions legislation is already in place and will be further enforced to wider areas.

Production of AUS40

All GreenChem blending sites are able to produce AUS40, a solution made of high specifications pure automotive urea and demineralised water. GreenChem has 25 production locations throughout Europe that can produce AUS40 and can perform bulk deliveries in a wide range of countries.

AUS40 is very similar product to AdBlue® in terms of storage and handling, although there are some specific properties which need to be taken into account.

Our high number of production locations gives us a high production flexibility and high service levels.

When buying AdBlue® or AUS40, you need to think of the storage. Essentially, all storage requirements of AdBlue® are applicable on AUS40. The main difference is in the temperature range applicable: AUS40 should be stored between 5°C and 25°C. Temperatures below 0°C are to be avoided, as well as temperatures above 30°C. AUS40 begins to freeze at 0°C; once thawed, it can be used again. AUS40 should be stored in a closed, dry room with good ventilation. There is no specification for the maximum allowed quantity of stored AUS40.
